Is Philips Hue Worth the Price?
I started with cheap WiFi bulbs from Amazon. They worked… sometimes. One would randomly turn on at 3am. Another dropped off the network every few weeks. After replacing the third one, I finally broke down and bought Hue.
That was two years ago. Haven’t had a single issue since.
The question everyone asks is whether Hue is worth paying two or three times more than budget options. My honest answer: it depends on how much you value things just working.

The Zigbee hub thing seems like a negative until you realize it means the bulbs don’t clog up your WiFi network. I have 14 Hue bulbs and they all go through a single hub connection.

This is where I tell most people to start, especially if you’re not sure how much you’ll use smart lighting.
Basic warm white, on/off, dimming. That’s it. Works great for hallways, closets, anywhere you just need light without the fancy stuff.

This is what I actually use in my home office and bedroom.
The ability to shift from cool white during the day to warm white at night makes more difference than I expected. I’m not entirely sure if it actually helps my sleep, but the warmer light in the evening does feel more relaxing.

Hue Color Starter Kit
Full color is fun but I’d be lying if I said I use it constantly.
It’s great for movie nights - I have a scene that dims everything to a warm glow. And my kids love picking colors for their rooms. But day-to-day, most of my lights are just set to white.

Beyond Bulbs
Light Strips: I put one behind my desk monitor. Reduces eye strain during late night work, or so I tell myself. Mostly it just looks cool.
Play Bars: These point at your wall behind the TV and change color based on what’s on screen. Completely unnecessary. I bought them anyway and don’t regret it.
Gradient Lightstrip: Multiple colors at once, specifically designed for TV backlighting. Expensive but the effect is impressive for movie watching.
What Hue Works With
Pretty much everything at this point:
- Alexa, Google Home, Siri - all work great
- HomeKit, SmartThings, IFTTT
- Spotify (lights pulse with music, which is either cool or annoying depending on your mood)
- Razer and other gaming peripherals
- Ring and various security systems
I’ve yet to find something that doesn’t integrate with Hue.
Setting Up Your System
Bridge placement: Needs to be within about 30 feet of your bulbs and connected to your router via ethernet. I stuck mine behind my TV stand.
Adding bulbs: Screw them in, open the app, tap search. They show up automatically. Genuinely that easy.
Organizing by room: Take the time to group bulbs by room. “Turn off the living room” is much better than “turn off bulb 3, bulb 4, and bulb 7.”
Automations: This is where Hue gets fun. I have my bedroom lights gradually brighten over 30 minutes before my alarm. Waking up is still unpleasant but slightly less so.
Spending Wisely on Hue
Here’s what I’d do if I were starting over:
- Living room: Color bulbs (you’ll actually use the colors here)
- Bedroom: White Ambiance (the warm/cool shift is useful)
- Kitchen/Bathroom: Just White (you need bright light, not mood lighting)
- Hallways: White (why pay extra for colors in a hallway?)
Also, IKEA Tradfri bulbs work with the Hue Bridge. They’re not as polished but they’re much cheaper if you need to fill out a lot of sockets.
Should You Buy Hue?
Probably yes if you:
- Want lights that reliably work every time
- Plan to build out a smart home over time
- Value the entertainment sync features
- Have dealt with flaky budget bulbs before
Probably no if you:
- Only need a couple bulbs automated
- Are on a tight budget
- Don’t care about integrations and just want basic voice control
My Suggestion
Start with the White Ambiance Starter Kit. The ability to adjust color temperature is more useful daily than full color, and the included dimmer switch gives you a physical control option.
If you want color, add it to your entertainment areas later. And seriously, check for sales. Hue stuff is frequently discounted around holidays and Prime Day.
