Upgrading From an iPhone 12

My iPhone 12 was showing its age. Battery life had gotten embarrassing, the camera felt outdated compared to what friends had, and some newer apps were getting sluggish. Skipping a few generations meant the 15 Pro Max felt like a pretty significant jump.

After four months of daily use, here’s what I actually think.

First Thing You Notice: The Titanium

Everyone talks about the titanium frame and honestly, it does feel different. Not dramatically lighter, but there’s a quality to how it sits in your hand. The brushed texture hides fingerprints better than the old stainless steel.

The frosted glass back picks up less smudges too. Small thing, but I appreciate not having to wipe my phone constantly.

The Camera Situation

Coming from an iPhone 12, the camera improvements are massive. Night mode shots that used to be grainy messes now look genuinely usable. The 5x telephoto zoom was something I didn’t think I’d use much, but I’ve found myself reaching for it constantly - concerts, kids’ sports games, anything at a distance.

What impressed me:

  • Low light photos are night and day better (pun intended)
  • The main sensor captures more detail than I expected
  • ProRes video is overkill for me but nice to have
  • Action mode stabilization is actually magic

What’s overhyped:

  • Portrait mode still makes weird mistakes around hair and edges
  • The photonic engine improvements are subtle at best
  • Macro mode is cool for about a week then you forget it exists

The 48MP sensor means huge file sizes if you shoot in full resolution. I mostly leave it on the standard 24MP mode.

USB-C Finally

Never thought I’d be excited about a charging port but here we are. I travel a lot and having one cable for my iPad, laptop, headphones, AND phone has been genuinely nice. No more digging through my bag for the one Lightning cable.

Transfer speeds are faster too. Getting photos and videos off the phone doesn’t take forever anymore.

Action Button Thoughts

Apple replaced the mute switch with a customizable Action button. I’ve got mine set to open the camera, which means I actually capture moments I would have missed before.

Other people use it for flashlight, voice memos, or shortcuts. Took me a couple weeks to stop instinctively reaching for a switch that wasn’t there.

Performance and Battery

The A17 Pro chip handles everything. Gaming, AR stuff, video editing - it’s all smooth. Honestly, phone chips have been “fast enough” for years, so the performance gains don’t feel revolutionary in everyday use.

Battery life is where I notice the real improvement. Coming from my degraded iPhone 12 battery, the difference is massive. I consistently end the day with 30-40% remaining, even with heavy use. Heavy video recording days will still drain it by evening, but normal use? Not a concern.

The Size Question

This is a big phone. I knew that going in but it’s still an adjustment. One-handed use is basically impossible for me unless I’m just scrolling. I’ve dropped it more than I’d like to admit in the first month.

For content consumption, the big screen is great. For quick texts and calls, I sometimes miss having something pocketable.

If you’re unsure, go to a store and hold one for a while. The regular Pro might be a better fit for smaller hands.

iOS 17 and Software Features

StandBy mode (the alarm clock thing when charging sideways) is useful on my nightstand. Live voicemail transcription has saved me from listening to rambling messages. Journal app is fine but I haven’t stuck with it.

The autocorrect improvements are subtle but I am typing more accurately. Or maybe that’s just me. Hard to tell.

What I’d Change

No charger in the box: Still annoying, especially at this price point. Yes I have USB-C chargers already, but the principle bothers me.

The notch is still there: Apple calls it Dynamic Island now and it does some neat tricks, but it’s still a notch eating into the screen.

Price: This phone costs more than my first laptop. Is it worth it? For me, upgrading from a 12, yes. If you have a 14 Pro, probably not.

Bottom Line

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is an excellent phone that’s hard to recommend with a straight face because of the price. If you’re coming from an older iPhone (12 or earlier), the upgrade feels substantial and worth it. The cameras alone might justify the cost depending on how much you use them.

If you have last year’s model, save your money for the next one. The improvements are iterative, not revolutionary.

I’m happy with my purchase, but I also acknowledge I’m paying a premium for what’s essentially a mature, polished product rather than anything groundbreaking.
