My Old Fire Stick Was Driving Me Crazy
I had the original Fire Stick for way too long. It had gotten painfully slow - opening Netflix took forever, scrolling was choppy, and the whole thing would freeze up at least once a week. So I finally upgraded to the 4K Max.
The difference is night and day.
What’s Actually Different About the 4K Max
Compared to the regular 4K stick and older models:
- Faster processor - 40% faster than the previous gen, and you can feel it
- Wi-Fi 6 support - matters if you have a newer router
- Picture-in-Picture - for live TV, which I rarely use but it’s nice
- Ambient mode - turns your TV into a photo frame when idle
The speed improvement alone made the upgrade worth it for me.
What’s in the Box
The stick itself is tiny and hides behind your TV. The remote is the real upgrade though:
- Dedicated app buttons (Netflix, Prime, Disney+, Hulu)
- Find my remote feature - saved me multiple times already
- Backlit buttons that light up in the dark
- TV volume and power controls built in
Setup took maybe 10 minutes. Plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, sign into your accounts. Pretty painless.
How It Performs
The speed is the biggest improvement I noticed. Apps open in a second or two instead of sitting there loading. Scrolling through menus is smooth. Alexa responds quickly when I use voice search.
If you have a Wi-Fi 6 router, you’ll get more stable 4K streaming, especially if you have a lot of devices on your network. My old stick would sometimes buffer during peak evening hours when everyone in my house was online. That’s mostly gone now.

When content supports 4K HDR, it looks really good. Watched some nature documentaries that were pretty stunning. Of course, you need a 4K TV and 4K content to actually see the benefit.

Fire OS has improved a lot over the years. The interface is cleaner than it used to be. You get:

- Universal search across streaming apps
- Alexa integration for voice control
- Parental controls
- Multiple user profiles
Pretty much every streaming app is available - Netflix, Prime, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Peacock, Paramount+, YouTube, Apple TV+, and more.
Voice Control
I was skeptical about using voice to control my TV, but it’s actually convenient:
- “Alexa, play The Office” - finds it across your apps
- “Alexa, show me action movies”
- “Alexa, turn off TV in 45 minutes”
Faster than scrolling around looking for something to watch.

Things That Bug Me
- Home screen has ads - there’s no getting around this
- Amazon heavily promotes their own content
- YouTube doesn’t support Dolby Vision for some reason
- You need an Amazon account
- Privacy isn’t Amazon’s strong suit
The ads are my main complaint. The home screen always has a big banner ad at the top and promoted content mixed in with your stuff. You get used to it, but it would be nice to have an ad-free option.

If you’re already in the Amazon ecosystem with Echo devices, the Fire Stick makes the most sense. Deep into Google? Look at Chromecast. Want a more neutral interface? Roku might be your pick.
Who Should Get This
Good fit if you:
- Already use Amazon Prime
- Have Alexa/Echo devices
- Want 4K HDR on a budget
- Have a Wi-Fi 6 router
- Are upgrading from an older streaming stick
Maybe look elsewhere if:
- You really can’t stand ads
- You’re deep in the Google or Apple world
- Privacy is a major concern for you
- You already have a newer streaming device
Final Thoughts
Look, it’s not perfect. The ads are annoying and Amazon definitely wants you in their ecosystem. But if you can deal with that, this is one of the better streaming devices you can get for the money. It’s fast, the picture quality is great, and the Alexa stuff actually works.
These things go on sale constantly - Prime Day, Black Friday, random Tuesday. Worth checking the current price before buying.
