Getting Salon Nails at Home
I used to spend $45 every two weeks on gel manicures. That’s over a thousand dollars a year on nails. Then I finally invested in my own gel kit and taught myself how to do it at home. Took a few attempts to get right, but now I can’t imagine going back.
Here’s everything I’ve learned about what products actually work and which ones are overhyped.

The colors are gorgeous and trendy. Curing is faster with the stronger lamp. Comes with nail art decorations if you’re into that, though I’ve never used them.
More than a beginner needs, honestly. But if you’ve been doing gel nails for a while and want to step up, this is a solid upgrade.
3. Beetles Gel Polish
I’m obsessed with these colors. The pigmentation is incredible, most shades cover in one coat. And the formula actually lasts without chipping or peeling.
The catch is you need to buy the lamp separately. But if you already have a lamp from a starter kit, these polishes are worth trying. I’ve slowly built up a collection and use them more than anything else now.

4. Essie
The classic for a reason. Ballet Slippers is still one of the most elegant neutrals ever made. The brush is wide and flat, which makes application much easier than those tiny drugstore brushes.
Most colors need two coats, which is annoying when you’re in a hurry. But the finish is beautiful and it lasts about a week before significant chipping. For regular polish, that’s pretty good.
5. OPI Nail Lacquer
What actual salons use. The color range is massive and the formula is consistently good. Those collection names are fun too, even if they’re kind of silly.
More expensive than drugstore polish but the quality difference is noticeable. The brush is easy to control and the color you see in the bottle is the color you get on your nails.
6. Olive and June
The handle on this bottle is everything. If you’ve ever struggled with shaky hands while painting your non-dominant side, you understand. It basically gives you more control and stability.
The polishes themselves are good too. Seven-free formula, nice modern colors, dry relatively quickly. The shade range is more limited than Essie or OPI, but what they have is carefully curated.

7. Orly Bonder Rubberized Base Coat
This stuff is like glue for your polish. I used to have polish lifting after two days. Now it stays put. The rubberized formula creates a flexible layer that moves with your nail instead of cracking.
A little goes a long way so the bottle lasts forever. Make sure to seal it properly between uses or it gets thick and goopy.
8. Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat
Sixty seconds to dry. I’m not exaggerating. This saved me from so many smudged manicures. The finish is incredibly shiny and glossy too.
The formula gets thick and stringy near the end of the bottle. You can buy thinner to fix this but it’s annoying. Still worth it for the fast drying though.

9. CND Solar Oil
My cuticles went from terrible to actually nice after I started using this daily. It absorbs fast, doesn’t leave greasy residue on everything you touch, and smells like almonds.
They make a pen version that’s great for keeping in your purse. I touch up my cuticles constantly now because it’s so easy.
10. OPI Nail Envy
When my nails were peeling and breaking constantly, this helped. It’s a strengthening treatment you can wear alone or under polish. Takes a few weeks of consistent use to see results, but they’re real.
Different versions for different problems, like dry or sensitive nails. I used the original for general strength.
11. Sally Hansen Hard as Nails
The budget version of nail strengthening. Not as good as Nail Envy but effective enough for the price. Available everywhere, which is convenient.
Fine as a starter if you’re not sure strengthening treatments are worth it for you.

12. Tweezerman Glass Nail File
I threw away all my emery boards after trying this. Glass files seal the nail edge instead of shredding it, which prevents splitting. Works in any direction so you don’t have to remember which way to file.
Can break if you drop it on a hard floor. Keep it in the protective sleeve. But otherwise it lasts basically forever.

How to Do a Good At-Home Manicure
Prep: Remove old polish, file nails in one direction (no sawing back and forth), push back cuticles gently with an orange stick. Never cut your cuticles, that’s how you get infections. Buff the surface lightly and clean with alcohol to remove oils.
Application: Base coat first, let it dry for a couple minutes. Thin coats of color, two usually does it. Let each coat dry before adding the next. Top coat last. Clean up any mistakes with a small brush dipped in remover.
Maintenance: Cuticle oil daily. Really. Reapply top coat every few days to extend the life. Wear gloves when you’re cleaning or doing dishes.
Common Mistakes I’ve Made
Applying thick coats. This causes bubbling and peeling. Thin layers cure better and last longer.
Skipping base coat. Your nails will stain, especially with dark colors. I learned this the hard way with a red polish.
Painting over your cuticles. The polish won’t stick to skin, so it’ll start peeling from there. Clean up the edges after each coat.
Shaking the polish bottle. Creates bubbles. Roll it between your palms instead.
