Paper Plates for People Who Don’t Want to Think About Paper Plates

I grabbed these for a backyard cookout last summer and ended up reordering them three times since. They’re nothing fancy, but they handle the job without falling apart or breaking the bank.

Real-World Testing

Durability Surprised Me

I figured cheap paper plates would get soggy fast. These don’t. Served pulled pork with coleslaw on them at a BBQ, and nobody had a plate collapse. The coating does its job - wet foods stay on top of the plate rather than soaking through.

That said, they have limits. Really saucy stuff like spaghetti will eventually weaken the plate if you let it sit there for a while. For normal eating, they’re solid.

Size Works for Most Meals

The 8.62-inch size fits a burger, some chips, and a pickle without looking cramped. It’s not huge, so don’t expect to pile on a Thanksgiving feast. But for casual meals, cookouts, and kids’ lunches, it’s the right size.

The Price-to-Quantity Ratio

A hundred plates for under ten bucks. Compare that to Chinet or Dixie and you’re paying roughly half as much per plate. When you’re feeding a crowd, that adds up fast.

The Downsides

Not Great for Hot, Heavy Foods

Tried using these for a lasagna portion at a potluck. Bad idea. The heat and weight made the plate droop. If you’re serving something substantial and hot, you might want to double up or use sturdier plates.

Basic Looking

They’re plain white. No patterns, no nothing. Fine for backyard stuff, but if you want something that looks a bit nicer for a party, these aren’t it.

Environmental Guilt

Look, I know disposable plates aren’t great for the planet. I try to use real dishes when it’s practical. But sometimes you’re hosting 30 people and nobody wants to do that many dishes. Just being honest about the tradeoff.

When to Use These

Good situations:

  • Outdoor parties and BBQs
  • Kids’ birthday parties
  • Camping trips
  • Busy weeknights when you’re exhausted
  • Office potlucks

Skip them for:

  • Formal events
  • Very heavy or hot foods
  • Situations where you can reasonably use real plates

Verdict

These are solid, no-frills paper plates that do what you need. Not the sturdiest option out there, but plenty good for casual use at a price that doesn’t hurt. I keep a pack in the garage for impromptu gatherings.

If you need plates that can handle heavy, saucy food, spend more on Chinet. For everything else, these work fine.
