A Month with the Ultraboost 22

I picked up the Adidas Ultraboost 22 about six weeks ago after my old running shoes finally gave up. I’d been eyeing them for a while, mostly because everyone I know who runs swears by Ultraboosts. Here’s what I found after putting some real miles on them.

How They Actually Feel

Comfort on Long Runs

The Boost midsole lives up to the hype. I did a 10-mile run last weekend and my feet felt surprisingly fresh afterward. That said, they run a bit narrow for me, and I have fairly average feet. If you have wider feet, definitely try them on before buying or consider going up half a size.

Day-to-Day Wear

I’ve been wearing these as my daily shoes too, not just for running. They’re comfortable enough for standing around all day, though they do get warm in indoor settings. The knit upper breathes well outside but traps heat when you’re in an office or store.

Build Quality

Here’s where I’m a bit torn. The upper started showing wear faster than I expected. After about a month of regular use, there’s some pilling on the Primeknit, especially where my foot bends. The sole still looks and feels great, but I’m not sure how long the upper will hold up. Previous Ultraboost models I’ve owned seemed more durable, though maybe I’m misremembering.

What I Like

  • The cushioning really is as good as people say
  • They look clean with jeans or athletic wear
  • The Continental rubber outsole grips well on wet pavement
  • Responsive enough for tempo runs

What Could Be Better

  • The price is hard to justify at full retail
  • Not as durable as older Ultraboost versions (in my experience)
  • Runs narrow
  • The lacing system can be fiddly to adjust

Should You Buy Them?

If you catch these on sale, they’re worth it for the comfort alone. At full price, I’d probably wait unless you specifically need a cushioned daily trainer. For racing or faster workouts, you might want something lighter and more responsive.

I’ve enjoyed running in them, but I wouldn’t say they’ve blown me away compared to my previous pair of running shoes. Good, solid shoes - just not revolutionary.
